with many an attempt to say the unsaid

while me
i’ve been making a living as a performance poet
for something like twenty-five years
and this is being the first time i’ve properly published ANYTHING
...
so i’ve had plenty of time
decades
to generate a huge quantity of ideas
of pieces of writing
and to assay them for quality
and originality
...
The Bucket was born from a huge digital file
filled with hundreds
and hundreds
of the lines i’d never said in a show
because too poetic
or subtle
or complex
or mad
a file which just kept growing
and which, for years and years
i was perpetually grading and assaying and sifting
moving the ones i liked best to the top of the file
...
so that i often scooped off the cream of the lines
and used them for poems
or one-liners
or titles
or blags
or something
...
yet only when The Bucket was becoming a thing
back in Gokarna in 2019
did i also add many many lines i had used in poems and shows
to assemble something vast
...
...
at some point soon i might write a post
answering
why?
why The Bucket?
and chiefly, why random?
...
...
in the meantime, i feel obligated to point out
that as The Bucket is unique
in that no-one has ever done this before
A Giant Number Of Pieces, Completely Randomised
then, of course
no-one has ever added to that giant number
so then this is another first
...
while me, as i’ve said
i believe first
and unique
and original
all go a very long way
have a significance in their own right
...
though i might add that i’m really not sure if everyone i communicate with
is terribly impressed by the weight of the originality
...

yet folk, writer-friends, have said
and do say
and i guess they are right
that what most matters is
HOW GOOD ARE THE PIECES
writing-wise
laugh-wise
original-wise
and wise-wise, i guess
for there’s the rub
