never published anything before [*]
never wanted to publish any poetry
never cared to be bothered with that world
when performance, audience
real people in the here and now
was so much more enthralling
so much more fun
so much more immediate
so much more doable
so much more undone
than anything The Page and its world could allow
...
and thus i got
this whole mountain of poetic powder
the devoted dogma of decades
has kept so very dry
so ready for the right idea
so ready for
this

“its the United Sites of Touristan
a sprawling global archipelago

Marrakesh, the city
one of my favourite cities ever
the Medina, the walled district of the city
one of my favourite places on earth
the Market, in the Medina
maybe my favourite market on Earth
the Djenna El Fnaa
the famous square, the old caravanserai
[rarely spelled the same way twice]
one of my favourite squares on this Earth
and the bread, The Bread
flat, grilled on a hot plate
like an Indian paratha, but better
my very favourite bread on this earth
...
and all
all
brawling teeming throbbing with
overwhelming with
life
human energy
...
the Market
never the same place twice
i was here ten years ago
and i never got a map of this place in my head
and i’m not going to try this time
though i am going to have to learn how to re-find the
best bread place

in other news
i’ve changed my mind about cruise ships
for i always disparaged cruise ships
always thought them an expensive
corporate
and feeble
way of not going anywhere
of avoiding the world
of homogenising and corporatising one’s life
but you know what?
now i think
cruise ships are a great thing
so its
cruise ships, cruise ships, cruise ships, whoo whoo whoo!!!
because you know where everyone would be if they
weren’t on cruise ships
weren’t self-ghettoised out of the world’s hair
well
they’d be stuffing up the world’s best cities
and loads of them would be here
in marvellous Marrakesh
clogging up the streets
doing the inane tourist thing
in thick immobilised knots of the anodyne
so
cruise ships
cruise ships
cruise ships!!!
whoo whoo whoo!!!
and you know
these streets are already clogged
are already crammed with inane tourists
with usses
while the Medina here is enormous
the Market is huge
yet its absolutely stuffed with foreigners
in ones, in couples, in families
in abject lines
in massive numbers
so if it wasn’t for cruise ships
and museums
sucking the anodyne into the squared and sterile
the bazaar would be squeezedly squishedly crammedly crushedly
unbearable
would be tediously
trippingly
toe-treadingly
impossible
and so its
cruise ships!
cruise ships!
cruise ships!
whoo whoo whoo!!!
...
of course
a particle in that throng
one of the usses
is us
yet
as someone said
Hypocrisy Makes The World Go Round
...
while
its the second place i’ve been this year that was
great ten or fifteen years ago
but is now rammed to the gills
with international tourism
for Hoi An in Vietnam was the same
yet the marvellous bit of old Hoi An is not that big
so its going to be unbearably overwhelmed very soon
possibly its been overwhelmed already
by crowds just too thickly thick for anyone’s comfort
yet this place
the Medina at Marrakesh
is of such sprawling extended scale
street after street after street after street after area after area
it will be a long time before it becomes intolerable
and that is partly because of
cruise ships cruise ships cruise ships!!! whoo whoo whoo!!!
...
...
while not only is it
exceptionally
difficult to map in one’s head
it also has the longest dead-ends of
anywhere i’ve ever been
you can escape the crowds into a
lovely cool calm side street-cum-alley
yet turn ten or twelve times and find...
nothing but dead-end
i’ve done that five times alreday today
though the dead ends do have a certain
attractive
ease and cool and shade and calm
...
and so
for now
Marrakesh
wonderful
one of the very best places on this Earth
...
next stop
Ouarzazarte
and the Sahara

[*]
there is the odd caveat to this statement
that i’ve never published anything
but nothing of note
nothing that wasn’t submitted chiefly because it
DID NOT
work on the page
because i really
really
did not care about The Page
...
and i’m still going to avoid it entirely

THE BUCKET OF UNUSED IDEAS
