sent from chilly Marrakesh...
yet i did not come to Africa to get cold...
and first time i came to Marrakesh it was
maybe
the hottest place i ever been
a bath in heat-soup
while now its December
and briskly chill
yet we were just in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains
which were so chilly that
upping the aircon was an unexpected godsend
and before that
we were in the Sahara
outside M’Hamid El Ghizlane
in a proper oasis
where it was unexpectedly cold at night
though gorgeous and fresh in the desert day
and then
after the sun-baked mud
and winding dusty country lanes
and large ornate elegant semi-castellated mud-brick houses
of Skoura
we came slowly through the snow-dusted valleys
beneath the snow-capped peaks of The Atlas
thinking the cold was behind us
to find that here, Marrakesh
amongst the thickly heaving tourist throng
it has gotten pretty unwarm
while in the oasis
we had a rather nice
errrr
hovel
cosy and lightless
and then
in the foothills
we were in a cute cosy room
in a family house
supremely hospitable and friendly and helpful
and now we’re here
in the Hotel Bar Yousseff
because i remembered walking a few times past the
Hotel Bar Yousseff
except when we got here
to find it a spartan hole
we realised we’d been walking past the Hotel
Dar Yousseff
which still looks nice
but would be a lot lot nicer if we weren’t staying
two streets
and just one letter away
in the noisy and smelly and not-really trying
Bar Yousseff
with a right racket beyond 1am
and before 7am
while i
tomorrow
have one day here by myself
to get lost again
in the Medina
which is very easy to do
in fact its like Bikaner or Varanasi
in that
you WILL get lost
while yesterday a pal posted a pearl of wisdom
which said
“you cannot get lost if you don’t know where you’re going”
so i had to point out that that is just plain wrong
because
whether or not you do
or you don’t
know where you’re going
you WILL get lost in the Medina here
so i have both the morning
and the afternoon
and maybe even the evening as well
to get thoroughly lost again
before i take a train to Rabat
where i have never been
for a few days in the Medina
in a city i know little about
though its the capital
yet its not the biggest or best known Moroccan city
or even in the top four
but it is on the coast
and apparently warmer
and is
most appealingly
a complete unknown except someone
and i wish i could remember who
someone
over the summer
told me the Medina in Rabat is great so
here we go
into the warmer so
here we go
or here i go
into a complete unknown
and...
